Hair Loss Information - MHR Belfast

Causes

Believe it or not, most people lose on average 50-100 hairs per day but it isn’t detectable due to new hair growing. However hair loss occurs when new hair doesn’t grow back in the follicle.

There are many causes of hair loss and it can span across more than one of the factors below:

  • Hereditary : This is probably the most common type of hair loss for males and females. It can come in many forms such as thinning, receding hairline, bald spots on crown.

  • Medical conditions : Conditions such as alopecia, skin infections, diabetes and trichotillomania all can have an impact on hair loss.

  • Ageing : The ageing process also contributes to hair loss as the rate of hair growth slows.

  • Medicines : Medication for certain conditions or illnesses can trigger hair loss as a side effect, such as depression, heart problems, cancer.

  • Stress : A stressful event or series of stressful episodes can have an impact or your hair.

  • Hair treatments : Extreme hair colouring and misuse or excessive use of extensions are becoming a common reason for hair loss in recent years.

  • Hormonal changes : Hair loss can be triggered by natural hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause or thyroid.
