Laser Hair Therapy - Hair Restoration FAQs
Following the success of our most recent blog on Hair Transplant FAQs, we have decided to put your questions on Laser Hair Therapy to our resident hair loss expert Eamonn Henry.
What is Laser Hair Therapy (LHT)?
The theory behind laser hair therapy (LHT) for hair loss is that it is a low level laser treatment, which encourages blood circulation and increased oxygen delivery, to stimulate hair follicles, to allow them to grow.
LHT irradiates photons into scalp tissues and these photons are absorbed by weaker cells to encourage hair follicles to grow.
This treatment is one of the hair restoration options we offer in our office/salon, aimed at those showing early signs of hair loss.
What is involved with Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) treatment?
Clients usually come to our office on a weekly basis to use the LHT machine for a minimum of 30 minutes. We have a MHR Belfast Expert on hand during the appointment for any queries.
Our Experts will review your situation during the initial consultation and advise if you need a course of hair loss medications, lotions or shampoos in conjunction with the LHT machine.
We have a TV in our LHT room for client use (chromecast enabled) so the 30 minutes does pass quickly. We also have WIFI should you wish to use your phone or tablet. You can leave straight after the appointment is over and go back to work or go about your day.
The benefit of having a MHR Belfast Expert at your appointments on LHT machine is so you can have expert support and advice readily available, check in on your progress with our Scalp Endoscope review or just to have someone who knows this area very well on hand for you on a weekly basis.
Does Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) hurt?
The good news is no, not one bit. Not whilst using the LHT machine or after you leave your appointment.
While sitting under our LHT machine, you won't feel any sensation at all, never mind pain. Some clients assume it will feel like heat or a blast of cold air, but it is neither. The machine may look like it is capable of those sensations, but it uses low level laser beams to stimulate hair growth, so when we say there is no pain, we are being totally honest.
Who is suitable for Laser Hair Therapy (LHT)?
As LHT is non invasive, we offer this treatment option to anyone over the age of 18.
We can consider other hair loss treatment options for those under 18 but this can be reviewed in the initial consultation.
Males and Females who are in the early stages of hair loss are most suitable for this treatment.
Suitable males, would include anyone starting to experience loss of hair in the crown, receding in hair line area or having noticed a general loss in hair volume. Anyone with early onset for male pattern baldness can opt for this treatment.
In terms of uptake by females, we are noticing in last 2 to 5 years a surge in female enquiries about this treatment option to help with damaged hair from extensions, over bleaching or over use of heated hair styling devices. Loss of volume and hair loss from hormonal changes are also key symptoms female clients come to us for help improving.
Random story but in the run up to our wedding 2 years ago, my wife to be was complaining that she didn't want to use hair extensions for her hair style on our wedding day, but couldnt see another option to achieve it. She needed her hair to have more volume and length. I suggested that she could use the LHT machine for 6 - 8 months in the run up to the wedding. She ended up having her desired hair style for our wedding day without having extensions in. You may see her about the office sometimes, as she still pops in and out for top up sessions, especially when she has a moment thinking she has cut her hair too short!!
So really what I am saying is, LHT is suitable for very minimal to mid range hair loss clients but we can advise in a consultation if this type of hair restoration treatment is right for you.
Is Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) an option if I have used other hair loss solutions before?
The non invasive nature of this treatment means most likely, yes! We will confirm this during an initial consultation but 99.9% of cases can go ahead with this treatment option.
We offer LHT as part of our Aftercare Package for Hair Transplant clients to make sure the investment made in their Hair Transplant is protected long term. We recommend waiting at least 4 weeks before starting this treatment after a hair transplant.
Can I go for a Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) appointment if I have just had a hair cut or recently dyed hair?
Yes, why not! It is a non invasive treatment so work away as far as we are concerned as it has no impact. It won’t affect the colour of your hair in any way, as the treatment targets the hair follicle itself not the hair strands.
What happens if I take a few weeks break from Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) for a holiday, work or family commitments etc?
This is not an issue. A few weeks away from LHT will have no impact on your progress. When you do return we will start you off again with a 1 hour session.
We do recommend no longer than a 4 week break (in a row) in your treatment in the first 6 to 8 months, as this treatment needs consistency and weekly appointments to achieve the outcome of fuller, volumised and rejuvenated hair.
When can I stop Laser Hair Therapy (LHT)?
We recommend a minimum of 8 months of the treatment to see true results and get the most out of your investment but even after your treatment has finished with us, we are still on hand for any hair loss related queries.
If you have any other questions, feel free to book an consultation with me (Eamonn). Our consultations are free and are in place to give you the best advice and also to give you all the information you need to feel comfortable and make the best decision for your hair.
